General Information

Who can join the program?

St. Monica's started a track and field program in 2003 which competes in the Diablo Valley (Section 1) CYO league. The program is open to boys and girls in grades 3 through 8 that either attend St. Monica's church or live within the St. Monica's parish boundaries. Currently, we are also accepting boys and girls from Orinda and the Santa Maria parish until a separate program is established.

What events can my child participate in?

The track rules contain a listing of all events that your child can participate in. Due to time constraints, we allow each child to participate in three events per meet (not including relay events). Click Here to view Track Rules. Click Here to link to the Diablo Valley website and see the Diablo Valley League section records.

Where and how often are practices held?

Practices begin February and are held two times a week in the early evening at a local high school track. The practices consist of stretching, conditioning, and instruction on and practice for specific events.

The track meets usually begin promptly at 9:00 am (athletes with events at the beginning of the meet to arrive for warm-up and stretching no later than 8:30 am) with the last event usually ending about 1:00 pm. Click here to read about Helpful Hints at Track Meets.

As a parent, am I required to volunteer?

The success of the track meets depends on good turnout by parent volunteers. As a parent you will be required to work at least three meets (per child participating) by assisting in field events, sheparding track athletes to running events, ribbon writing, or serving as a timer.

What is the registration fee and what does it cover?

The registration fee (per child) for 2009 is $125 for parishioners and $135 for non-parishioners. The fee covers use permits fees for use of the various high school tracks, team insurance, team uniform/t-shirt (t-shirt and shorts, child keeps, and use of running jersey for the season), team equipment and participation fee to Diablo Valley Section.

Do I need to buy special track shoes for my child?

You are not required to buy special track shoes for your child. A good quality pair of running shoes will do. However, if your child is in 5th grade or above will be running relay races, sprints, and/or participating in the long or high jump, track shoes with spikes are recommended. Track shoes with spikes are not recommended for those athletes running the 800 M or above. The league requires a special type of spike that won't damage the tracks and we will provide those types of spikes to the athletes who need them at the first practice meet.

You can buy track shoes at any sporting goods store. A store that specializes in track and field shoes/clothing and will give CYO track athletes a 10% discount on shoes if you purchase with cash, check or ATM is Athletic Outpost. They also have given good service and advice in the past. They are located close by in Walnut Creek (1528 Bonanza Street, Walnut Creek 925-943-6453).
