Helpful Hints for Track Meets

1.      If your child has track spikes please remind them not to step on people's hands when they are waiting for their race. They could severely hurt someone's hands. BE VERY CAREFUL. The children should also be wary of those children that are wearing spikes around them. The spikes should only be worn for the 50,100,200 and long jump. Grades 6-8 can wear them for the 400 if they wish. Do not wear them at practices. They have no support and they will give your child shin splints. They should walk on their heels until they are on grass or the track - it will save the spikes.

2.      Please bring healthy foods to the meets. No candy or soda before noon. Eat a light snack half an hour before your event. Please remember we may have athletes with an allergy to peanuts so please avoid foods that contain peanuts, peanut butter, etc.

3.      Drink - preferably water throughout the meet and before the meet.

4.      Adequate clothing - sweats (labeled) over your uniform.

5.      Check to see if shoes are tied before your event.

6.      Sunscreen - even if the day is overcast. Consider wearing a hat between events.

7.      Please sit together as a team - look for the St. Monica banner and sit near it. This is very important. Looking for athletes and parents that are spread out is very unnecessary and time consuming.

8.      Please be on time to the meets. We will warm up as a team and need to practice relays. We recommend arriving 45 minutes, but no later than 30 minutes, before the start of the meet.

9.      Please stay in the stands unless you are in an event.

10.  Please follow directions that are given to you by the parent volunteers and other track coaches.

11.  Please do not run across the track or long jump lanes.

12.  Use the restroom the first time they call your event.

13.  It is important to stay warm and stretch while you are waiting for your event.

14.  Listen to the announcements for your events and check in right away - if your two events are running simultaneously - check in at your field event and then return to your field event after your running event is finished.

15.  Please practice good sportsmanship. Be friendly to the other teams. Be kind to your own relay teams (no blame for dropped batons, etc.) and be flexible and amenable to last minute changes. Cheer for your teammates.

16.  Do not approach the officials or parent volunteers with problems- find a coach and air your disagreements. They will take the necessary steps to settle the issue.

17.  The track meets can be very long - so switch off with other parents to supervise your child and run an errand, etc. Bring a book, gameboy, a deck of cards, or an MP3 music player and visit with the athletes. Meets can be fun and a nice social activity.

18.  Consider setting up carpools to get your children to the meets.

WE ALL WANT YOU TO HAVE FUN AND BE SUCCESSFUL, BUT WE ALSO WANT YOU TO BE SAFE AND INJURY FREE.
